Yes, absolutely. As a general rule, teenagers and older students are typically assigned teachers of the same gender. An exception to this rule is when the student requires very specialized area of expertise then teacher's academic training is taken into consideration to assign the best match. 

Younger children can be assigned teachers from either genders depending on student/parent preferences and the assessment of student needs and how they match with teachers' background and training.
